The Rega RS1 is a simple, purist design speaker which though fairly modest in size gives a wonderful open and involving sound way above the usual performance level this price. Don't expect a huge bass sound, but the response is so well balanced that the music holds your attention and you aren't distracted by 'Hifi issues'. Most of the RS1s competitors have an engineered in bass 'hump' to give a false impression of big bass, but this affects the rhythm and balance of the music making it laborious and strained.
As with all Rega products the simplicity of the design is the key … very accurate and well damped drivers do not need over complex crossovers, which cuts down on cost and allows the music to flow more naturally and cleanly.
Rega still use paper cone drivers, which may seem very outdated in today's world of ceramics and carbon fibre, but in reality the original technology was never really surpassed. Expensive high tech materials may theoretically give an advantage but always seem to have a sonic drawback greater than their benefit … though their use looks good in a sales brochure!
