After the quite astonishing success of the Apollo CD Player, Rega set about making a 'reference' player from the same chassis, building on the technology to such an extent that the Saturn is regarded by some as the best CD Player available.
The Saturn uses twin Wolfson WM8740 DACs one per channel, rather than the single used in the Apollo. A larger 60va transformer, which has separate windings for the audio and display circuits essential for keeping noise to a minimum, higher grade 'Class A' audio stage and filtering cleans up the sound giving greater dynamics and tight accurate bass.
The simple frill free control panel is the same as the Apollo, as is the manual door and three point disc mounting, as these features offer straight forward functionality and increase reliability. This follows Regas philosophy of 'if it doesn't improve the sound it shouldn't be there'. A motorised drawer for instance costs a lot to design and build and is usually the first part of a player to fail.
Interestingly we find that a high percentage of enthusiasts with mainly vinyl based systems, will have a Rega Player to play their CDs. Regas are still one of the few CD Players that present music with true soul and emotion.
