The Rega RS5 uses a similar layout to the RS3 but on a larger scale. It uses the same front drivers, but a much larger 7" unit on the side, which gives the RS5 serious bass weight and slam, but without sacrificing the clarity and balance of the RS1s and RS3s.
Though larger in every dimension than the RS3 the RS5 is still a fairly compact design and gives the visual impression of being much smaller than it is, as the cabinet has a small frontal area but is quite deep, which gives the internal volume necessary to create the realistic dynamic that the RS5 is capable of.
Rega still use paper cone drivers, which may seem very outdated in today's world of ceramics and carbon fibre, but in reality the original technology was never really surpassed. Expensive high tech materials may theoretically give an advantage but always seem to have a sonic drawback greater than their benefit … though their use looks good in a sales brochure!
