Rega Apheta
The Rega Apheta took 4 yrs to design and build. Rega are never early adopters so for them to wait 50yrs, from the arrival of the first examples, to bring out a MC cartridge was not totally surprising.
In typical Rega fashion though, they have not just built their own version of an existing design, they started at the beginning and rethought the whole principle. Modern materials such as Neodymium magnets and synthetic elastometers allowed Rega to dispense with some quite fundamental parts which before now were thought to be necessary. The normal stylus tensioning wire, for instance was not included, this creates a resonance around 8 - 12 KHz, and with new materials used to attach the cantilever, now unnecessary.
The body is formed from a solid block of aluminium alloy and the diamond tip of the stylus, a favourite high end profile, the Vital Hyperelliptical.
Even the first prototype examples of these cartridges were obviously at a level never before seen at this price and the Apheta should soon establish itself as the chosen reference for most high end vinyl users.
